Pippa MacPhee has been involved with horses since she was 12 years old. As a teenager Pippa started working for Rick and Jennifer Maynard as a groom, mucker, rider, instructor and eventually their Barn Manager. Pippa has been riding and teaching in the Southlands area of Vancouver for the past 15 years. She has successfully competed both Nationally and Internationally with horses that she has trained herself since they were young. Pippa achieved her Pony Club “A” in 1998 and has traveled to Spruce Meadows, The Royal Winter Fair, Indio, Germany, and Switzerland to compete in Hunters, Jumpers, and Dressage.
Pippa trains with Rick Maynard and has also received coaching from Jennifer Maynard, Claudia Cojacar and Eddie Macken, as well as numerous dressage, and hunter/jumper clinicians.
In her off time Pippa rock climbs, canoes with her dog jasper, plays with her vintage Landover, skis, camps, surfs, reads, sews, and bakes. Pippa is also the co-coordinator for the highly successful Southlands Country Fair.
Although Pippa still rides, trains, brings along young horses, and competes in the Jumpers with her horse Pikara, her main focus has shifted towards her coaching, and her student’s pleasure and competitive goals.
Pippa has had over 15 years experience coaching both the young and old. She works with students ranging from beginners, to those working towards Grand Prix, those who have a strong competitive drive, to those who simply want to enjoy riding and learn as much as possible.
Pippa’s strengths as a coach lie in her own riding and competitive experience. Not being a “natural” rider has made Pippa very good at explaining to students why, and how to do things as opposed to just telling them to do it!
She has had experience with different types of horses, and has brought along many young horses to the upper levels of dressage and jumping. She is excellent at working with difficult horses, or those with “problems” that need help sorting out.

Pippa’s teaching philosophy is to teach the rider the skills to be able to ride any horse with confidence, and to have a strong background in dressage as well as jumping. Pippa firmly believes that the rider should do as much of the training of their horse as possible- she works with students to fix their issues rather than getting on the horse regularly to fix them herself.
For those looking to advance their beginner skills, or those looking to get back into riding after a break, Pippa is a kind, patient, fun coach. She also has a few horses available for lease, and or weekly lessons.
Last but not least, " have fun in every possible situation- good or bad!"
Pippa and Marta believe in creating community for their students, and hold monthly “social nights”. Here, the students get together, have games nights, mini competitions, or outings and generally get to know each other. Team spirit and friendship is encouraged, because first and foremost riding is about having FUN!
Pippa is also the co-ordinator for the annual Southlands Fair, and she and her students are often involved in this fun event! (press the link above for more info.)
Marta is the assistant instructor at Talisman Farm. She teaches beginner lessons, on school horses, to students of all ages.
Marta began riding at the age of 12, at Maynard's, right here in Southlands.
After many years of being limited to weekly lessons on school ponies, she decided it wasn't enough. She found work mucking stalls, in order to pay for her first lease horse. It was then that she became a member of the riding club and began taking lessons with Pippa.
Shortly after, an opportunity presented itself to teach birthday parties and summer camps at Maynard's, which she happily accepted. What better way to spend your time than with kids and ponies, right? It was there that she also began to teach lessons.
Now a Southlands resident, on a property with 10 lovely horses that she helps look after, Marta is committed full time to this busy lifestyle! Everyday she feeds, mucks, rides several horses, grooms for Pippa, and teaches, and she loves every minute of it!
She continues to train with Pippa on several different horses in order to further her riding skills and be a versatile rider. Marta competes in the jumpers on Berengeria, also known as "Bear", who Pippa used to compete herself.
When time allows, Marta loves to rock climb, ski/snowboard, hike, camp, go to the beach, swim, cook/bake, scrapbook, read, listen to music, and takes the dogs on adventures.
Whether you want to learn to walk/trot/canter/jump or just be able to trot a horse down the river trail, Marta will help you reach your goals safely and patiently. She has experience with nervous riders and is happy to push you to learn new skills, or take things slowly if that is what you prefer. Whether you love horses or are a little bit timid around them, you will learn to understand them and be a confident horse person, first on the ground, then mounted. You will learn how to approach and catch a horse, groom and tack up, mount, learn the basic aids to walk/trot/canter, and eventually jump small jumps if you wish! Most importantly, you will become a confident, independent rider, because if you are not comfortable on a horse you are probably not having fun, and having fun is the most important part of riding!

As an adult novice equestrian, my fear of injury from a fall lurks just below the surface. In Pippa, I have found a coach who understands my fears but doesn't let me give in to them. She follows my agenda of what I want to accomplish with my riding and knows when to push me to a new level of confidence and when to step back to help me just find a positive ride. And I swear, she celebrates my successes, no matter how small, like they are her own!
Marta has been coaching my daughter Sarah for two years. We feel so fortunate that we were originally partnered up with her. At the time we had no idea what to expect in regards to guidance, coaching, progression, community etc. Marta has exceeded every expectation that we had. She has taken Sarah under her wing and guided her through the process.
We came in having no understanding of the equestrian community and from the very beginning Marta showed us the ropes and made us feel welcome and a part of the Southlands community.
Marta has taken Sarah from a complete beginner and guided her to compete effectively in competitions.
She often goes the extra mile making sure that we are up-to-date and meeting deadlines for various registration.
Marta has been the greatest influence for My daughter Sarah. Her personality is so warm and kind and I could not ask for a better mentor for my daughter . She is exceptionally gifted at meeting a horse and rider combination, and finding balance in their training program to bring them both along to achieve their fullest potential together.
Marta is very enthusiastic and encouraging, and shows lots of passion and energy. She takes every chance to give praise and help the students remember what they did right and keep them highly motivated throughout the entire class. She always knows how hard to push both the rider and horse in a quiet and gentle way so that every lesson is rewarding and a great experience. She engages the riders mind, teaching body awareness as well as tries to teach the feel of how things should be so they are better prepared to handle similar situations on their own.
She often goes the extra mile, running overtime to get an issue sorted or get a point through. I highly recommend Marta as a coach to anyone of any age. I have just begun riding myself, and Marta has been a great Coach.
